We get asked everyday what’s with all the different types of TV’s how do I know what one to buy? First off let me start by saying we do not deal with the high end market so our answer will not be going out and buying the latest and greatest. Although they are cool and we would love to have one too! There are several types, Plasma, LED, OLED, Curved, 4K, UHD where to start?
Lets start with Plasma in 2014 production of these TV’s stopped they are quality and great TV’s and I would recommend them in a room with little or no light movie rooms and basements these babies rock!
LED is probably what most people have today. They are very thin and light TV’s and most TV’s sold today are more economical prices are LED’s. The picture quality is good and they are very reliable. This is about 80% of what we install. The most popular TV and model number is the Samsung 6300 series. This is a smart TV that allows you to connect to the internet via a full web browser on your TV, as well as stream video from online sources like Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, YouTube and many others! According to Samsung’s website as of the date of this writing a 50″ 6300 series TV goes for $999.
The next types is where it gets tricky. TV’s are going through an evolution and the next wave of HDTV is here!
The first one I will talk about is OLED this is perhaps the most exciting one as well! Believe it or not you have seen these already. Samsung’s Galaxy A7 is just one example of an OLED screen. The principle behind this technology is to make screens thin REAL thin and even flexible yes flexible! The image quality on these things is AMAZING! The idea is a TV can be placed anywhere eventually. Right now this is new technology to market so it can be quite expensive. According to Samsung’s website a 55″ OLED is $9999.99.
Next we have Curved these don’t necessarily have much to do with the picture as Curved TV’s are available in both LED and OLED. The principle behind these is EVERY room has what’s called a sweet spot meaning the best place to sit for optimal viewing experience. What the curved does is move that spot to EVERY seat in the room eliminating a poor image when viewing the TV at an angle. That is the big advantage in my opinion as well as Curved TV’s being OLED which gives it better picture quality.
4K, and UHD are 2 terms that are being thrown out a lot too as they are both similar I will explain them together. Let me start by saying these are in relation to image quality not screen type. In our current knowledge of HDTV there is 3 types of screen resolution they are 480, 720, 1080. Basically a good, better, best. UHD is a term for the next level of screen resolution which are going to be 2K, 4K , 8K. So the short answer is when someone says a TV is UHD it just means its capable of 2K, 4K, or 8K which has a much better picture quality. TV’s equipped with these technologies also take today’s standards and up convert them to enhance the picture.
I have seen all of these TV’s and they are amazing! If you can afford them by all means get one you will not be disappointed!
